The Huskies summer high school baseball team shut out Silverton 10-0 in five innings on the road June 27 and lost to Crescent Valley 8-1 at home on Thursday.
Justin Rice pitched a complete game at Silverton, said Coach Chris Miner. “He threw really well. He had nine strikeouts.”
Rice got into a bases-loaded jam with less than two outs twice in the first two innings, Miner said, but he got out of those without allowing any runs.
At bat, Rice led the Huskies, going 3-3 with three RBIs and a triple. Jeremy White, Corey Hanks and Nate Melcher, each had a couple of hits.
Only two guys didn’t get any hits, Miner said.
Silverton, a 5A team, fielded a young team, although not too much younger than the Huskies, Miner said. The team had five freshmen, three sophomores and four juniors, while the Huskies fielded three seniors, three juniors and the rest in freshmen and sophomores.
Crescent Valley gave the Huskies a tougher time.
“They had a pitcher that threw really good off-speed stuff, a good changeup and a good curveball,” Miner said. On the other hand, the pitcher only struck out one Husky, but the Huskies kept hitting lines right at people.
That pitcher had a perfect game going until the fourth inning when he walked Jeremy White.
Drayson Scott started on the Huskies mound, Miner said. Pitching four innings, he had some control problems early on and got into two jams, giving up one run in each.
He did a good job getting through it, Miner said, and he settled down and stated throwing more strikeouts.
Kory Van Deusen took over in the fifth, Miner said. He threw all right and got a lot of grounds and fly outs.
Crescent Valley took advantage of defensive miscues behind Van Deusen, Miner said.
Rice scored the Huskies’ only run on a sac fly to center field from Hanks.
“They played hard,” Miner said. “They competed hard. We look forward to playing this week.”
The Huskies stay home all week, facing North Salem Wednesday and McNary on Friday.
