Sweet Home 3, Newport 1
The Huskies swept Newport this season with a 3-1 win at home on Friday.
“The game was full of really sound defense, maybe the best defense we have played all year,” Coach Steve Hummer said. ”Sara Brocard gave us a huge lift in the second inning with a two-run homerun, her fifth of the year. She then added an RBI single in the fourth.
“After that Makenzie (Marchbanks, nine strikeouts) pitched her way through their lineup, and we made some great plays behind her.
“Idhana (Huenergardt) made a great play on a high hopper in the sixth right after Olivia Lake threw out a runner at first. Both plays took away sure hits that kept them from gaining any momentum.
“Lacey Mink made a great play on a ball earlier in the game that kept another runner off the base paths.
“Overall, it was just a great performance by our defense and Sara really stepped up big on senior night.”
Marchbanks struck out nine batters.
The Huskies were scheduled to play at Central, which has defeated them twice. If they defeat Central, they’ll share the Val-Co title. With two losses to Central though, the Huskies will be seeded second in the league for state playoffs.
The Huskies will play Yamhill-Carlton at 5 p.m. on May 22 in the first round of playoffs.
“Yamhill is the third-ranked team in the state, and we are very excited about the opportunity to face them,” Hummer said. “I really feel like the girls are ready to make a run at anyone we play.
“I wanted to thank the community for all their support so far this season. It has really been nice to see so many people getting out to see us play. The community has really gotten behind us in a number of ways, and we hope that we are making all of you very proud. We will hope to host a second round game and see everyone at the field again this summer.”
