The Husky track team visited Stayton High School on Thursday for a three way league meet with the Eagles and the Sisters Outlaws.
“We saw both teams the weekend before at the Junction City Invitational so we had a pretty good idea of what to expect,” said Coach Billy Snow. “The weather conditions cooperated for a while but about halfway through the meet, the wind and rain showed up and we finished the second half of the meet getting wet and battling the wind on the homestretch.”
Boys Results
The guys had lost to Stayton at Junction City by about 100 points but we knew that we could compete with this team in a three way meet, Coach Snow said.
“We have as much depth as Stayton so we figured that at least on the guys side that we would just not get outnumbered,” he added. “The guys won the meet 68 to 65.5 over Stayton with Sisters a distant third at 45.5. What was really great to see was that we scored in all events except and that we did not have every one in their best events. We scored eight first places but we won because guys were picking up points for seconds thirds and fourths. Missing one guy from an event could have swung the meet in Stayton’s favor.”
On the day, the guys had 27 PRs (personal records) in 59 attempts. For the conditions, coaches felt that was pretty good. The weather and wind certainly held down marks and times to a degree.
In the field, Matt Slauson won two events Keegan Burnett one.
“Matt continues to be our leader in the throws, winning both the shot (42-04.5) and the discus (138-02),” Coach Snow said. “Matt was behind in the shot until his last throw and pulled out the win on his sixth and final put. Although he was well back of his PR, Matt came back in the discus to PR and win that event.”
Rob Martin had a big time PR in the shot put, going 39-02.5 to take fourth in that event. In the discus, Brad Seiber added to the scoring by going third with a toss of 112-01.
Mike Severns and Malcolm Brown added some big points in the javelin. Malcolm was third at 127-00 with Mike just behind in fourth at 125-00. Also recording PRs in the javelin were Jonathan Anderegg (103-04) and Aaron Badgett (117-04).
In the pole vault, Keegan Burnett had a career day. His vault of 13-00 won the event over teammate Robert McGarry (12-00) and puts Keegan #4 in the vault in school history. Doing this in the rain and with no misses makes it that much more impressive, Coach Snow said. “Keegan has worked hard the past week getting up on a stiffer and bigger pole and the height was a result of that work. Tory Petersen tied his season PR in the vault also.”
In the long jump, we were 3 for 4 in PRs, lead by Randy Nicholson and Ricky Stock, both going 18-05.5. Randy edged Ricky for fourth place by virtue of a better second jump. Frosh Kellen Petersen also PRed at 17-04.25. Kellen also had a nonscoring PR in the high jump.
Randy came back to go third in the triple jump with a PR 35-08.5 leap. In his first attempt at this event, Mike Severns leapt to a 34-06 fourth place finish to add to the point parade.
On the track, the guys came up with five first place finishes, including both the relays, along with four second place finishes.
In the 400M relay, Mike Severns, Mauro Angulo, Jared Allen, and Ricky Stock ran a near season PR of 46.3 to win easily.
In the final event of the day, the foursome of Nik Walker, Jeremy Fisher, Ryan Garrett, and Nik Walker won the 1600M relay (3.46.8) to add the final points and determine the final difference in the score.
“It was great to see two freshmen and two guys new to track go after it and have that kind of success,” Coach Snow said.
Jeremy Fisher had a huge day for a freshman. “We worked a lot on steps in the high hurdles this week and Jeremy cashed in on a big payday,” Coach Snow said.
His PR of 18.5 in the highs ended up winning the event as everyone else pressed and faltered. In the intermediate hurdles, Jeremy tied his season PR of 47.6 for second place. Then, due to some injuries, the coaches threw him into the 1600M relay and he responded with a two second PR there. “That’s a great day for any track athlete but more so for a freshman,” Coach Snow said.
In the distance events, John Lovik continues to run extremely tough, according to Coach Snow. John garnered two second place finishes in the 1500M and 3000M.
In the shorter race, John was barely outkicked at the end, running 4.30.9. In the longer race, John ran a season PR 9.42.0 to take another close second.
“John’s been working hard in practice and he’ll be heard from come district meet time,” Coach Snow predicted.
Aaron Lovik (4.48.2) and Chris Burford (4.35.9) also PRed in the 1500M but couldn’t crack the scoring column. Chris also had another non scoring PR in the 800M (2.14.6).
Casey Baarson added a huge third place finish in the 300 hurdles. Despite pulling a muscle halfway through the race, Casey finished in a near PR time of 47.8 to nab third.
In the short sprints, Nik Walker had two big first place finishes. Nik won the 100M into a stiff wind at 11.8 and then came back to win the 200M in season PR of 23.8.
Ricky Stock was fourth in the 100M at 12.2. Other PRs in the 200M were recorded by Tory Petersen and Wayne Martinez.
Frosh Ryan Garrett ran a season PR in the 400M to go second at 56.3. His time ties him with Manuel Robledo for fourth on the freshmen list for SHHS. Jonathan Wilson also had a two second PR in the same event.
Girls Results
The girls (36) were third behind Sisters at 80.5 and Stayton at 69.5.
“We just do not have enough depth on the track to stay with these teams as a team,” Coach Snow said. “This is the third meet in a row that we have seen Sisters so it will be nice to go elsewhere next week. However we, competed well and had some good time and marks.”
On the track, Megan Snow was two for two in the PR department. Megan had a great week of practice and followed that up with two tough races. In the 1500M, Meagn ran a season PR 5.52.3 to go third. She came back and ran a great race in the 3000M, going 12.59.0 for a nonscoring fifth but still a season PR.
Kari McGuyre ran a season PR 67.5 to win the 400M for one of our Sweet Home’s two wins on the track. Fellow freshman Elissa McCartin ran third at 71.0 with teammate Alisha Basham recording a nonscoring PR of 75,2 in the same race.
Lisa Brocard worked on four stepping this week and did so all the way through the 100M high hurdles. She dropped a full second from her PR, running 18.2 for our other win on the track. In the 300M hurdles, Kim Lovik continues to improve and went 62.2 for a fourth place finish.
In the field, the throws were a very tough competition with the Stayton girls who have some quality throwers this season. Nicole Burnside had a lifetime PR in the shot put at 35-08 to place second. Rachel Gaskey was right behind at 33-07 for third place. Also recording PRs in the shot put were Meaghan Schaefer, Amber Larsen, Danielle Rice, Laura Munoz, and Blair Clark.
Rachel came back in the discus to throw a near season PR 92-04 to place third for her second scoring. Shaina Burnett, Laura Munoz, Krystle Streight, and Amber Larsen also had PRs in the discus.
In the javelin, the Huskies were shut out in a very tough competition for a three-way meet. However, Diane Kennelly and Michelle Fields each recorded PRs at the JV level. Michelle’s mark of 83-02 put s her #9 on the freshman list for Sweet Home.
Lisa Brocard added to her track points by winning the triple jump and taking second in the long jump. Lisa went 32-00 in the triple to top teammate Ashley Smith, 29-07.
In the long jump, Lisa had a season PR 14-09 to place second. Her mark puts her #10 on the Sweet Home sophomore list. Ashley Smith took fourth in the long jump at 13-09.5
Our only other points in the field came in the high jump from Kari McGuyre. Kari cleared 4-06, the same as the winner but had one more miss to place second in this event.
Sweet Home’s meet is Thursday at perennial powerhouse Cascade.
“We have number of injuries that we need to get healed up and hope to be near full strength for the Cougars,” Coach Snow said.
