Husky boys win at Junction City meet

Sweet Home traveled to Junction City to take part in a seven team unique scoring invitational on Saturday. Also present was Newport, Sisters, Stayton, Toldeo, and Elmira.

The meets features a unique scoring format where each team is allowed three persons per event with all entrants scoring. First place was 21 points, second 20 right on down to 21st place worth one point.

“It really stresses team depth and spreading your kids around to maximize points,” explained Coach Billy Snow. ” It also allows all kids to be a part of the team score, not just a select few at the top. Despite a continual strong wind, rain most of the day and cool temperatures, we had a great meet as a team. We had a number of kids trying things for the first time, just to fill slots and get kids involved.”

Boys Results

Our boys were just awesome today, winning the meet by 8.5 points over the host Tigers. The huskies had 650 points with JC at 641.5, Elmira 547.5, Sisters 442, Stayton at 441, Newport at 361.5 and Toledo at 239.

“Our guys won with some good performance at the top but really with great team depth,” Coach Snow said. ” Take away any one guy and the results as a team would have been different.”

On the day, the Husky boys won four events on the track. The short relay team of Mike Severns, Casey Baarson, Randy Nicholson, and Paris Ramsey won in a slow 46.7. Ramsey opened a lot of eyes with two convincing wins, running 11.3 into the wind to win the 100m. Later in the day, he blew away the field to win the 200M in 22.7. His time puts him No. 3 in school history.

The other Husky win came from Casey Baarson who “ran an awesome race in the 300M hurdles,” according to Coach Snow. “Casey had a great corner coming into the stretch to take the lead and then despite two bad hurdles at the end hung on for the win in a PR time.”

John Lovik had a couple of impressive races, going a PR 4.28.5 in the 1500M for fourth. He doubled back in the 3000M to go third in a PR 9.49.6. In the 1500M, Chris Burford’s PR 4.38.6 put him ninth and Sam Bishop ran a PR 5.15.9 for 16th.

Helping Baarson out in the low hurdles was Jeremy Fisher fifth in a PR 46.7 and Skyler Brown 11th in 49.5. In the high hurdles, Fisher led the way going a PR 18.3 for fourth with Baarson eighth in a PR 19.1. Brown was right with them but was caught by another competitor’s hurdle and knocked out of the race.

Lastly, the 1600M relay team of Lummus, Garrett, Lynn, and Burford had a season PR of 3.52.6 to go third overall. Lynn and Burford both had season PR splits.

In the field, the Huskies had two more wins. Robert McGarry defended his title that he won last year despite the bad conditions, going 12-06 to win the pole vault.

Mike Severns bested a good field in the javelin to win at a near PR of 155-09. Randy Nicholson had a near win in the triple jump, finally settling for second at 40-00. Joining Nicholson in the triple were Kellen Petersen with a PR of 37-00 for seventh and first timer Mike Lummus seventh at 35-08. Ole Bond helped out with a 11th place tie in the pole vault at 8-00.

“Our guys really showed today that they can be a good team. They cannot depend on any one individual to carry them but rather everyone has to do his part for the whole to be put in to position for some success,” Coach Snow said.

Girls Results

The Husky girls faired well despite depleted ranks.

“We were missing 4 or 5 people and then another three came up hurt or sick during the meet. Despite that, our girls were leading midway through the meet,” Coach Snow said. ” We just ran out of numbers and couldn’t do anything about it. However, the girls really competed well and came away not only with some good time and mark, but also a message that they can be a good team if everyone contributes.”

Overall team scores were Sisters, 566; Stayton, 531; JC, 526; Sweet Home, 419; Elmira, 399.5; Newport, 349.5; Toledo, 170.
