Sweet Home Police Department has taken a juvenile into custody following a threat toward Sweet Home High School.

The juvenile, who is not a student in the Sweet Home School District, had posted a video of himself holding a pistol along with a reference to the high school.

Law enforcement identified the individual but initially struggled to locate him. After an extensive investigation, the juvenile was taken into custody on charges of disorderly conduct in the first degree and unlawful possession of a firearm. He has been lodged at the Linn-Benton Juvenile Detention Center.

Sweet Home School District announced that schools will remain closed on Friday, Sept. 13, in light of the emotional impact the threat has had on students, staff and the community. Schools are set to reopen on Monday. The district extended its gratitude to Sweet Home Police Department and the community for its support during this incident.

The investigation remains ongoing, with police remaining on the scene after the arrest. Officers continue to urge the public to provide any additional information that may assist with the investigation.

The initial threat prompted the Sweet Home School District to cancel classes on Thursday, Sept. 12, as a precautionary measure. In addition to school closures, the district closed the Sweet Home Community Pool and canceled all extracurricular activities, including the varsity football game scheduled for Friday night.

Authorities stressed that this incident is unrelated to a previous threat made over the summer, which was deemed non-credible after investigation.

In response to community inquiries about the suspect’s identity, the police explained that Oregon law protects the confidentiality of minors. As a result, the juvenile’s name and photo have not been released.

“We understand the frustration,” Sweet Home Police Department stated in a release, “but confidentiality laws are in place to protect minors, and we must comply with them while ensuring the public’s safety.”

Police thanked the community for their cooperation and vigilance during the investigation. They reassured residents that the safety of students, staff and the broader community remains their top priority. At this time, law enforcement does not believe there is any further threat.

For now, Sweet Home schools will stay closed through Friday, and further updates will be provided as needed.
