The Linn-Benton Concert Band will present their annual Veterans Day Patriotic Pops Concert, on Saturday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lebanon Elks Lodge Ballroom located on the corner of Park and Ash Streets in Lebanon. The family- oriented concert will include a wide variety of music with a special tribute to American military veterans. The concert will be patterned after the very popular Boston Pops Concerts with table seating and hors-D’oeuvres and refreshments available.
Featured vocalists on the concert will be well-known baritone Pete Butler from Lebanon who will sing I Dream of Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair by Stephen Foster and American the Beautiful and The Battle Hymn of the Republic. He will also be the narrator for Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev. Featured work on the program will be Wind in the Willows Suite by Dutch composer Johan De Meij.
This delightful work features sections, which musically tell the story of several characters in this children’s favorite story including Ratty, Mole and Mr. Toad. Other selections on the concert will include: Mancini Spectacular, a collection of popular Henry Mancini tunes, Themes Like Old Times II based on several popular songs from the early part of The 20th Century, Big Bands in Concerts featuring several big band tunes made popular by Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Stan Kenton and numerous traditional marches.
The concert will also include a tribute to the six branches of the U.S. military with the playing of each group’s official song. The grand finale of the concert will be the performance of The Stars and Stripes Forever by Sousa with a silent auction held during the concert for a member of the audience to conduct the band playing this famous march.
The concert is co-sponsored by the Linn-Benton Concert Band and the Scholarship Committee of St. Edwards Catholic Church in Lebanon. Individual tickets for the gala evening are available for $7 at Stainthorp’s Music and Main Street 7-11 in Lebanon; Gracewinds Music in Corvallis; Mid-Valley Gems and Jewelry in Albany, from band members and at the door. The Linn-Benton Concert Band, a community ensemble based in Albany, numbers about 60 musicians ranging in age from teens to the late 70’s from many vocations and from the Mid-Willamette Valley towns of Albany, Corvallis, Independence, Keizer, Lebanon, Monmouth, Salem, Silverton and Sweet Home. Conductor of the band since 1972 is Dr. Richard Sorenson, emeritus Professor of Music, Head of the Music Department and Director of Bands at Western Oregon University where he taught for over 30 years. Associate conductor is Chris Barreto, retired music teacher from Lebanon.
