Citywide Spring Clean

An excavator carries a metallic washing machine frame to a large dumpster during Community Cleanup Day on Saturday, April 5, at the Central Linn Rec Center.

Brownsville resident Brett Miles took advantage of the opportunity to get rid of an old cast iron wood stove.

“It needs to go so it can be recycled and reused,” he said.

The City of Brownsville hosts the event for its residents every year, giving the community a chance to clear out large items that would otherwise be difficult to dispose of. Sweet Home Sanitation set out several large dumpsters and used an excavator to collect items that will be either recycled or transferred to the landfill.

“It’s really nice that they do this every year; I think it’s just a nice community service,” Miles said. “It clears up so much of the things on the property.”

This year, some items collected by Sweet Home Sanitation included wheelbarrows, washing machines, furniture and water heaters.

“Great, nice people,” Miles said. “Just everybody’s workin’ hard. It’s just a down-home good experience.”

New engine for Halsey-Shedd

The Halsey-Shedd Rural Fire Protection District received a new fire engine on March 14, thanks to a FEMA grant. With costs rising everywhere, accessing modern technology for community safety is a struggle. Special districts, like at Halsey-Shedd, rely on grants to help protect their communities.
