The Halsey-Shedd Volunteer Fire Association held its bi-annual pancake breakfast feed fundraiser Saturday, May 17. The Fire Volunteer Association served 213 people, raising $1,749 for the cause.
According to Staff Captain Sean Johnson, proceeds help fund medical equipment and training for the Halsey-Shedd Rural Fire Protection District, which serves 110 square miles. Halsey-Shedd RFPD runs four stations situated in Halsey, Shedd, Peoria and Oakville, and operates with two paid staff members and 32 volunteers.
The Volunteer Fire Association also hosts a winter breakfast feed fundraiser to help fund the Central Linn Meals on Wheels program.
Kevin Mosher and Sarah Market, of Albany, said they’ve been going to the breakfast fundraiser for more than 10 years now because, one, they’re friends with some of the crew and two, the food is good.

Books to borrow, seeds to keep
Halsey resident Yvonne Shum flips through a stack of seeds at the Halsey Public Library, selecting lettuce, beets, beans, carrots and basil. Library Director Kaitlyn Watts said Mayor Jerry Lachenbruch helps stock the Free Seed Library every year, and anyone – library patron or not – is welcome to take some home. There are a variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers to choose from. Beside books, library patrons also have access to the Library of Things, supported by Oregon State University’s Extension Service, which offers food processing items on loan, such as a vacuum sealer, food dehydrator, fermentation crock, and steam or pressure canners.
