East Linn Softball
ELCA’s softball team remained in third place in the Division 2 standings coming into this week, despite going 1-2 against Culver last week.
East Linn came into this week with a 12-5 league record, sitting two games behind Monroe (14-3), with Regis leading the league at 18-0.
The Eagles were to face the Rams at home Tuesday, May 12, with two season-ending games at Regis Thursday, May 14.
The Eagles play a non-league game at Crow Wednesday.
On the road at Culver on May 5, ELCA got runs from Alivia Kropf and Ally Hatch, thanks to a double from Hatch, but the hosts erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the inning for a 7-2 lead, and never looked back, ripping East Linn starter Macy Rehnberg for 21 hits over four innings to build a 17-3 lead.
Trailing 17-3 after Madison Adams stole home to score in the top of the fourth, the Eagles added three runs in the top of the fifth to close the gap to 17-7, but it was too little too late.
East Linn finished with seven hits off Culver sophomore pitcher Evan Silbernagel, who was in the circle for both of the first two games of the series. Hatch and Adams both had two hits, but the hosts’ bats produced 23.
At Columbus Park Friday, the home diamond didn’t help ELCA initially as the Bulldogs again opened up on Rehnberg, leading 9-1 after three innings en route to a 14-4 win.
Josi Davidson went 2-2 for the Eagles and Liv Kropf delivered a double, but Culver finished with 19 hits, three of them doubles.
Things changed for East Linn in the nightcap, though.
Culver started Gabi Terrazas in the circle instead of Silbernagle, and the Eagles jumped on her for 15 runs, taking advantage of nine walks and three hit batters, and adding four hits. Culver put Silbernagle back in late in the inning, but the game was over after three innings.
Kropf pitched for ELCA, giving up three hits and two runs in the 17-2 win.
East Linn Baseball
The Eagles had a tough week in their series with Culver, winning a tight game on the road, then losing the next two.
East Linn got off to an early start against the Bulldogs on Tuesday, May 5, leading the hosts 7-1 going into the bottom of the third, thanks to a succession of walks combined with some aggressive activity at the plate.
But Culver’s bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth and the Bulldogs tied the score, 7-7, then kept things going to lead 12-7 going into the seventh frame.
East Linn tied things up, 12-12, with a combination of free bases and some timely singles from Isaac Taylor and Asher Taylor, and surged ahead in the eighth, taking a 14-12 lead on a double by Noah Medellin that scored Marshall Darwood.
It wasn’t over. The Bulldogs tied things up again in the bottom of the inning, 14-14, and the game went into the ninth inning.
The Eagles took the lead again, 15-14, when Casey May scored on a wild pitch and May then retired three Culver batters for the win.
Asher Taylor led the team at the plate, going 3-5 and scoring four runs, while Blake Burns also had three hits in six at-bats, including a triple. Taylor and Medellin both had doubles.
In the first game of a doubleheader at home Friday, East Linn again surged to an early 4-0 lead after two innings, but Culver came back to lead 9-4 going into the bottom of the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh the Eagles roared back, Nolan Hooper singling to get things started, and Burns following that up with a double to score Medellin, who had walked. Then May cracked his second double of the game to cut Culver’s lead to 9-7, but that proved to be all she wrote for East Linn.
Isaiah Blount led the Eagles at the plate, going 3-4, and May and Burns both contributed two hits each, Burns scoring three runs.
In the nightcap, Culver kept the pedal to the metal, leading 12-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, when East Linn got some traction and scored three runs on a double to left field by Asher Taylor. Burns scored one more run for the Eagles, but the visitors added one more as well, in the top of the seventh, for a 13-5 win.
Those losses dropped East Linn into sixth place in Special District 3 at 6-12, two games behind Culver (8-10), coming into this week with a series against fourth-place Santiam (9-9) on the schedule.
District 3 has two more weeks of regular-season play.
