Sweet Home man arrested after allegedly ramming police unit

A Sweet Home man who was being sought after allegedly fleeing from police a week earlier was arrested Friday, Jan. 10, after again allegedly attempting to flee.

Travis Ayres, 24, was lodged at Linn County Jail on charges of second-degree assault, resisting arrest, attempted assault on a public safety officer, reckless endangerment, first-degree criminal mischief, failure to perform duties of a driver, attempt to elude in a vehicle, and attempt to elude on foot.

Travis Ayres and Trevor Ayres, 25, were being sought after an altercation at about 11:05 p.m. on Jan. 3, when a Sweet Home police officer located a disturbance at the intersection of 13th Avenue and Long Street that involved several people.

According to a police statement, the officer contacted a male victim with a severe facial injury.  The two suspects, later identified as the Ayreses, left in a vehicle but returned shortly. After almost striking the officer with the vehicle, the males fled at a high rate of speed east on Long Street, police said.

The vehicle the males were operating struck another vehicle, occupied by five people, in the 2200 block of Long Street. Officers responded to the crash location and learned the two male occupants had fled on foot and could not be located. The occupants of the vehicle that was struck were assessed by Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District personnel for suspected minor injuries, police said.

At about 9:08 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, a Sweet Home Police officer  located Travis Ayres at a residence on 46th Avenue.  Additional officers responded in marked police vehicles and attempted to stop Ayres as he was leaving the residence in a vehicle.

According to police, Ayres reversed the vehicle down the street, trying to elude the officers.  His vehicle struck a parked vehicle as it continued in reverse for several hundred feet, police said.  An officer maneuvered his police vehicle behind Ayres’s vehicle and Ayres continued in reverse, striking the driver’s side of the police vehicle in the area of 46th Avenue and Manzanita Street.

Ayres fled from the vehicle and was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.  No officers were injured during the Jan. 10  incident.

Ayres was transported to the Linn County Jail. Bail was set at $150,000. He has two other open cases for second degree theft, felon in possession of a firearm, second degree criminal mischief and fleeing or attempting to elude.

April May Ayres, 47, was arrested for hindering prosecution. She was cited and released.

An investigation is continuing to locate Trevor Ayres. Anyone with information can contact Officer Trevor Sundquist at (541) 367-5181 or [email protected].
