Three Cobras finish with state track medals in four events

Anya Griffith, Jayne Neal and Don Ware all came away with four medals each to lead Central Linn in last week’s 2A state Track and Field Championships, held  May 29-30 at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Griffith, a freshman, was fourth in the 1500 (4:57.23, a personal best), fourth  in the 400 (59.64, also a PR) and helped the 4×400 Relay team of Neal, Georgia Wahl and Jennifer Smith to a seventh-place finish (4:18.63) and the team of Smith, Isabelle Curtis and Aaliyah Hite to eighth place in the 4×100 Relay in 52.48).

Neal, a junior, was fifth in the 1500 (4:59.99, a PR) and fourth in the 800 (2:25.17, also a PR). The 1500 winner was Daisy Lalonde, who outleaned Santiam’s Averie Peterson to win and set a new 2A state record of 4:41.35.

Also for the girls, freshman Alyse Glenn placed 12th in the 800 in a PR of 2:37.58.

For the boys, Ware, a junior, was third in the 400 (51.20), and eighth in the 800 (2:12.01) behind teammate Jackson Duringer, also a junior, who was sixth (2:03.77, a PR). Ware also anchored the 4×400 Relay team of Duringer, Coen Schneiter and Benito Manuel to a fourth-place finish (3:32.78) and ran a leg on the 4×100 Relay with Manuel, Schneiter and Sawyer Kirk to finish eighth (45.19).

Duringer was 13th in the 1500 (4:33.71) and Manuel was 12th in the 200 (23.89).

Also medaling for the Cobras was senior Nolen Eversull, who was fourth in the Triple Jump (12.42 meters/40-9, a PR).

The boys finished 12th with 21 points, as Delphia took the team trophy with 84 points, followed by Illinois Valley (67), Knappa (52) and Columbia Christian (48).

The girls were 13th with 22 points, as Bandon ran away with the team title (91 points) followed by Salem Academy (64.5),  East Linn Christian (56), and Heppner (49).
