Information on special education

Per federal law, children with special needs have a right to special education.

Disabilities could include physical impairments, chronic illness, intellectual disabilities, hearing and vision difficulties, speech or language impairments, or learning disabilities.

If the child is of school age, contact the Lebanon School District at (541) 259-8930. If the child is aged birth through 5 years and lives in Linn County, contact the Linn and Benton County Early Intervention Program at (541) 704-4025.

Referrals may be made at any time. There is no cost.

Exchange student hosts sought

Interested in hosting a foreign exchange student?

International Experience, a nonprofit student exchange organization based in Monroe, is seeking local families to host students for the upcoming school year.

Host families provide safe and caring hospitality, meals, local transportation and a quiet place to study. Students provide their own spending money, school expenses and insurance.

Children of host families are also eligible for scholarships to visit other countries through IE three-week summer immersion homestay programs.

‘Small art’ on display at gallery

Linn County Arts Guild’s Third Annual Li’l Art Show runs through July 29 at 846 Main St., inside the Sun Lane Stones Artisan Collective.

The exibit features “small art,” 2- or 3-D works that are 8×10 inches or smaller.

Movies on screen at Ralston Park

Lebanon’s Movies in the Park series runs through Aug. 18 at Ralston Park, on Park Street north of Oak.

The fun starts at 8:15 p.m. Fridays, with movies showing at dusk.

Golf tournament to swing into town

Adult and Teen Challenge will hold a Swing for Hope Golf Tournament Friday, June 23, at Mallard Creek Golf Course, 31966 Bellinger Scale Road.

A shotgun start begins at 8 a.m. Cost is $125 per player or $500 for a party of four, which includes green fees, a golf cart and lunch.

Native American cultural events

Linn County will host three Cultural Encampments this summer, at local county parks.

The events bring Native Americans together in village-type settings, using tipis and tents, in which they share individual cultures and traditional information. A variety of tribes from throughout the U.S. are represented.

Each encampment runs Friday through Sunday. Events scheduled are:

June 23-25 at Roaring River County Park.

July 28-30 at Waterloo County Park.

Aug. 25-27 at Cascadia County Park.

Events include Morning Prayer at sunup, followed by the opening of camp at 10 a.m., storytelling and flute music, craft classes, traditional dancing demonstrations and Evening Prayer.

‘Moonglow’ on stage in Albany

“Moonglow,” a comedy/drama about the effects of Alzheimer’s disease on patients and their families, will open Friday, June 23, at Albany Civic Theater, 111 First Ave. W.

In the play, Maxine, a feisty, bitter Alzheimer’s victim, doesn’t want to move into a nursing facility. But when she meets Joe, a widower who shares her love for dance, her outlook begins to change.

Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. on June 23, 24, 29, 30 and July 1. A matinee perfomance will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 25.

Tickets are $14 for adults, $11 for youths under 18, seniors 60 and over, U.S. military veterans, and holders of Oregon Trail Cards. Tickets for streamed online performances are also available.

Ruck march to remember fallen

The annual Lebanon Memorial March will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 24, starting at Carl’s Jr. , 525 Weldwood Drive.

This is the fifth year for the 12-mile ruck march for charity, which ends at Thriftway in Sweet Home. The march is held in recognition of those who have sacrifice for America’s freedoms.

Charity car show to ride June 24

Sweet Home will host its annual Sweet Home Sweet Ride Charity Car Show for Kids from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at 880 22nd Ave., behind the Sweet High School football stadium.

Some 100 trophies will be awarded in such categories as cars of nearly every decade, pickups, motorcycles, dirt bikes, ATVs, 4x4s, log/semi/dump trucks and vintage trailers.

A burnout pit is part of the schedule, usually in the late morning. Other activities include 50/50 raffles, a food court, a vendors alley, poker walk and music. Admission is free.

July 4 fireworks volunteers needed

Yep, the fireworks show will be back Tuesday, July 4, at Cheadle Lake Park.

However, if spectators are to be allowed into the park, volunteer help is needed for parking and other activities.

The show is scheduled to start at 10 p.m.

First Friday block party, sale planned

Lebanon Downtown Association will host a “Block Party & Star Spangled Sidewalk Sale” for its First Friday event from 4 to 8 p.m. on July 7.

There will be a barbecue, chips and drink special, sidewalk sales by downtown merchants, vendors, a passport raffle scavenger hunt, chalk walk and pie baking contest.

Chamber golf tourney July 7

Lebanon Chamber of Commerce and COMP Northwest will host the chamber’s annual golf tournament Friday, July 7, at Mallard Creek Golf Course, 31966 Bellinger Scale Road.

The fundraising event offers a variety of entry opportunities for local teams, who will start at 8 a.m., shotgun-style. Registration is at 7 a.m. at the golf course.

Participants have a chance to win a Mallard Creek membership, a $2,000 value.

Sportsman’s Holiday in SH

Sweet Home will celebrate its annual Sportsman’s Holiday festival July 7-8 with a wide variety of activities to which visitors are welcome.

The Icebox Cut the Gut Cruise will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 7. The cruise features over 20 checkpoints throughout the city, where participants will have their passports stamped for a chance to win a raffle prize.

Participants are encouraged to bring their best rides to show off, and spectators are encouraged to sit along the route to watch the show. Registration is required to participate.

The Sportsman’s Holiday Parade takes place at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 8, along Main and Long streets in downtown Sweet Home. This year’s theme is “Welcome to Wonderland.” Entries are $10.

The Logger Olympics pits teams of local forest industry professionals together in a variety of competitions at the Outdoor Events Center, 4001 Long St. It begins at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 8.

The Chips and Splinters musical show, featuring “Alice and Friends,” will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 8, in the BiMart parking lot, 1980 Main St. Alice will be joined by her friends, Ariel, Ursula, Chef Louis, Princess Tiana, the Seven Dwarves, and more in a family-friendly show that’s free. Bring the little princes and princesses.

Attendeeds can stay on site and watch the fireworks show.

The Sportsman’s Holiday Fireworks Show will take place in Quarry Park, behind Bi-Mart. Parking is available to paying spectators. For information, contact the Chamber of Commerce at (541) 367-6186.

Downtown Street Market July 8

An HNB Street Market will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 8, in downtown Lebanon.

The event, on Vine, Ash and Sherman streets between Park and Second, will feature music and vendors from across Oregon selling items ranging from antique and vintage, to handmade items and flea market goodies.

Food trucks will be available.

Linn County Fair July 13-15

Linn County Fair runs July 13-15 at the Fairgrounds, 3700 Knox Butte Road, Albany.

Clint Black, Smash Mouth and Granger Smith will headline the Main Stage entertainment. Concerts are free with paid admission, although reserved seating is available, starting at $25.

Main Stage acts start at 8:30 p.m. with opening acts at 7 p.m. each night.

General admission to the Fair is: Adults – $9 on-line, $10 at gate; seniors $7/$8; children 12 and under, free.

Parking is $5 per day.

Friends of Library Book Sale July 15

Friends of the Lebanon Public Library will host their monthly Book Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St.

On sale will be a select inventory of books, new arrivals, special editions and sets, DVDs, CDs, audio books, and more. Most books range from 50 cents to $2 each. Credit/debit cards are accepted on purchases of $5 and up.

Proceeds support children’s programs and special projects at the Lebanon Public Library.

FAC Marble Hunt July 15 in SH

Family Assistance and Resource Group and Haught Flash Glass host the “Great Sweet Home Marble Hunt” from 12 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, at Sankey Park, 877 14th Ave., Sweet Home.

The event is a fundraiser for FAC featuring handcrafted marbles by borosilicate glass artist Christan Stagg from Haught Flash Glass. Marbles are valued at between $10 to $150 each. Cost to participate is $5 per child and $10 per adult. Registered participants will be entered into a drawing for a giveaway.

‘Dirty Rotten’ on stage in July

The Lebanon Association for Theatre Arts and its Sweet Home counterpart SHOCASE will stage “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels – The Musical” July 20-22 at Lebanon High School Performing Arts Center, 1700 S. Fifth St.

Performances are 7 p.m. on July 20-22, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, July 22.

Travel to the French Riviera for high jinks and hilarity in a sophisticated, suave show that features a good deal of mischief. This historical comedy, directed by Aaron Smith, was nominated for 11 Tony Awards and features a jazzy score by David Yasbeck.

The show will also be staged at Sweet Home High School auditorium, 1600 Long St., at 7 p.m. July 28-29, with a matinee performance at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 29.

Car photos sought for new exhibit

Linn County Arts Guild invites local photographers to submit mounted, framed and ready-to-hang photos of automotive themes for its third annual Photo Show.

Photos can be submitted beginning July 25 and the show will run Aug. 1 through Sept. 2 at 846 Main St. in Lebanon.

The theme this year is “Cars,” to coincide with the First Friday Flash Back Classic Car Show and Bingo Walk, which will be Aug. 4.

The show will be free and open to the public.

Japanese culture program July 27

Yumi Torimaru will provide a program of Japanese folklore and mythology at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 27, at the Lebanon Library, 55 Academy St.

Torimaru, a bilingual Japanese “cultural edutainer” from Portland, has performed hundreds of times in the Northwest on Taiko drums, the three-stringed tsusgaru shamisen and shinobue (bamboo flute).

This event is for all ages. Registration is not required.

Guitars Under the Stars July 27-29

Guitars Under the Stars returns for its 10th year with a four-day intensive music camp and festival July 27-29 at Cheadle Lake Park.

It will offer a diverse range of musical performances across various genres, from blues to hard rock and heavy metal, as well as food vendors and a beer garden.

The festival kicks off with a free-to-public event on Thursday, July 27, featuring two-time Grammy winner Larry Mitchell, Robert Anthony Robinson, Sad Reason, Alamance and Beautiful Skeletons.

Friday’s lineup includes a GUTS Music Experience Camp All-Star Jam featuring George Lynch, Greg Howe, Stu Hamm, Carmine and Vinny Appice, Jeremiah Johnson, Larry Mitchell, Robert Anthony Robinson, Ty Curtis, Eric Barnett, Travis Larson, Ed To Shred and Chris Poland. The evening headliner will be the Greg Howe Band featuring Stu Hamm, along with Points North, blues artists Jeremiah Johnson and Ty Curtis, and progressive rocker Travis Larson of California.

Saturday’s lineup will be headlined by Lynch Mob, preceded by the Appice Brothers, Ed to Shred, Nixon Rodeo, Boundless Joy, Hyper Sloth, Othrys, Sweater For An Astronaut and Seven Second Circle.

National Night out in Lebanon

Lebanon Police Department will host National Night Out from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, in Academy Square, adjacent to the library at 55 Academy St.

Enjoy a karaoke contest, a rubber duckie contest, a dunk tank, vendors, a donut eating contest, and more.
