Huskies manhandle Cascade 34-6

Sweet Home’s defense pulled the plug on the Cascade Cougars Thursday night, upending their Capital Conference foes 34-6 at Husky Field.

“Our defense played very well,” Coach Rob Younger said of the lopsided victory that saw the Husky varsity out of action for much of the second half. “They didn’t get a first down until late in the second quarter and they didn’t score until the fourth quarter.”

Coach Younger said his Huskies “dominated them up front. By far it was our best defensive game of the year.”

The Huskies pounded out 261 yards on 45 carries and Husky quarterbacks connected on 4 of 11 passes for 59 yards for a 320 yard night.

McCubbins scored the Huskies’ first TD of the night on a four yard run in the opening quarter. Miner scored on a 23 yard run and Cliver kick in the second quarter and Matuszak snagged a seven yard pass from Seward for a 21-0 Husky halftime lead.

Sweet Home’s lone third quarter TD was a five yard run by Graves and a Cliver PAT. The Huskies rounded out their offensive game in the fourth with a one yard run by Miner.

Cascade ran the ball 28 times for 139 yards and completed 7 of 12 passes for 49 yards for a 176 yard night.

“About 80 of those yards game in the fourth quarter against our junior varsity,” Coach Younger said.

Husky special teams got a lot of credit for consistently keeping Cascade away.

“We had four punts inside our 40 yard line,” Coach Younger said. “Our defense just kept shutting them down.”

Individually, Seth Graves rushed 14 times for 54 yards, Minor was 8 for 24, Seward 5 for 23, Cliver 2 for 47 and McCubbins 3 for 9.

On the receiving list, Casey Baarson was 1 for 30 yards.

Offensive the Huskies hammered away at Cascade but hurt themselves with penalties and miscues.

Offensive player of the week was Rob Martin. Defensive players of the week were Levi McCubbins and Tyler Emmert and special teams player of the week was Tim Matuszak.

Calendar: The Huskies host their toughest opponent of the season, the Sisters Outlaws Friday at Husky Field. Sisters brings a 6-0 record two town.

“They are a very good football team,” Coach Younger said. “They can throw and run. It’s going to be an exciting week for us.”
