Sweet Home’s track and field teams enjoyed taking a victory lap after defeating Woodburn’s boys and girls at home in a dual meet Thursday, April 11.
‘’The team did really well,” head coach Nathan Whitfield said.
The boys won 89-44, while the girls outscored the Bulldogs 92-39 behind 33 personal bests on the boys side and 28 for the girls.
“We competed well and the weather was nice,” Whitfield said. “What more could you ask for?”
For the girls, freshman Brooke Elder won the 100 (13.92), the 200 (29.39) and anchored both the short and long relay teams to victory – Woodburn didn’t enter the 4×400 and was disqualified in the 4×100.
Other winners for the Huskies were senior Lydia Wright in the 400 in a season’s-best 1:07.65, junior Amelia Sullens in the 800 (2:50.78), senior Rylee Markell in the 1500 (5:52.78), sophomore Delainie Pratt in the 100 Hurdles (19.58) and the Pole Vault (7-0) – both PRs, sophomore Selah Wright with a 9-inch PR in the Shot (29.10), and junior Peyton Markell with a 3½-foot PR in the Javelin (109-2), followed by Wright in second with 93-0, a 5½-foot PR.
“Selah and Peyton both had a great day and Delainie had a good meet as well, with PRs in both the Pole Vault and hurdles,” Whitfield noted.
For the boys, junior Chase Cameron won the 200 (24.25), senior Kyle Sieminski the 400 (53.85), freshman Kason Koenig-Walters the 1500 (4:51.58) – a 10-second PR, freshman Nick Larson the 110 Hurdles (18.45), junior Dylan Sharp the Shot (43-6½), junior Conner Pace the Discus with a 10-foot PR (130-10), junior Rickey Erickson the Javelin in a 5½-foot PR (136-2), freshman Thomas Culbertson the Pole Vault (7-0), and senior Colin Nicholson the Triple Jump in a personal-best 39-10.
“Both the guys relays did really well,” Whitfield said, “and both Kyle and Dillon (Davis) did really well in the open 400.” Davis posted a 2½ second PR in the quarter mile, in 54.25.
Also, freshman Landon Murry placed second in the Long Jump with a nearly 2-foot PR (17-4).
Sweet Home traveled to North Marion on Tuesday, April 16.
This Saturday, April 20, with Cascade, the Huskies will host the Meet of Champions at Husky Field. The meet, for which contestants must qualify, features most of the top performers in the 4A through 1A divisions in western Oregon thus far in the season.
“We have 37 teams right now signed up to come,” Whitfield said. “We’ll have the top 18 from those teams in field events, and the top 24 on the track. It’s a good opportunity for our kids to see how they do against the top competition.”
He noted that Sieminski and Davis, who were ranked third and fourth in the Oregon West Conference going into this week, will not be able to compete for the Huskies in the open 400 due to the state Greco and Freestyle wrestling championships being held that day, but Whitfield said most of Sweet Home’s other top athletes are expected to participate.
“We’ll have a better idea of who-all we get in the Meet of Champs after (North Marion on) Tuesday,” he said.
MOC field events start at 10 a.m., with running events at 11:30.
